Rapeseed Methyl EsterBiodiesel is produced from sustainable raw materials. In Germany, rapeseed is often used for the production of biodiesel. This has led to the establishment of the term RME (rapeseed methyl ester). From an ecological point of view, rapeseed methyl ester represents a viable alternative to conventional diesel fuel because it ensures a closed CO2 cycle. This means that the plant absorbs the same amount of CO2 during growth as it emits subsequently when burnt. However, as the basic composition of biodiesel differs from conventional diesel fuel, it cannot be used unrestrictedly as a direct substitute for diesel. The greatest problem at present is the fact that there is no uniform standard for the quality and composition of biodiesel. Biodiesel is therefore not unconditionally approved for use in Volkswagen vehicles. |
