GTI

GTI

In 1976, two years after launching the first Golf, Volkswagen founded the compact sports saloon class with the introduction of the first Golf GTI (Gran Tourisme Injection). The GTI was originally only planned to be a special limited edition; however, due to its huge popularity, it became a permanent member of the Volkswagen range. The original GTI generated 110 hp from a capacity of 1.6 litres and reached the 100 km/h mark in 9.2 seconds. At the time, these performance figures were in a class of their own. The blend of driving pleasure, functionality and suitability for everyday use filled a gap in the market and thus formed the basis of the GTI legend. With the new Golf GTI, Volkswagen has picked up on the strengths of the first GTI and offers driving pleasure without compromise through cutting-edge engine and suspension technology.
